And Even More Five Minute Paintings

Another session of Five-Minute-Paintings produced the following. Many of you wanted to know what happens next with the paintings. Good question. I want to continue each painting, see where it goes, but try not to loose the fresh, spontaneous quality. So here is the plan: I will post these paintings again after Ive worked on them more. I dont know if all of them will make it to anything resembling "completion" - in fact I am absolutely sure that not all of them will. But Ill work on each one and see what happens.

#10

#11

#12

#13

I did these with a 3.5" brush - from the paint department of a hardware store - and interior latex paint for the BIG colors. Red, green, magenta, and quinacridone gold are all "real" paint from Golden. Id bought twelve different intense colors of a good quality interior latex paint, in quarts, eggshell finish, to see what it would be like to use in paintings. It definitely makes me feel freer, less precious about the material. It has a nice consistency - like fluid acrylics - but it does have to be stirred before every painting session.

Anyone trying this themselves, please let me know how it worked for you. If you have a blog or web site where you can post it, include the url in your comment.

And Even More Refinements in SFR

As some readers will know Ive been writing the last couple weeks here and on Baseball Prospectus about a play by play fielding system termed Simple Fielding Runs or SFR.

After last weeks column I had a chance to tweak the system yet again, and made the following changes.

Took into consideration the additional context of whether first base was occupied for all infielders. It turns out that for first baseman on ground balls hit by lefties the percentage of runners who reach (hit or error) goes from 16% to 24% when first is occupied, and from 20% to 29% for right-handers. For second baseman in the same scenarios it goes from 27% to 29% and 30% to 34%, for shortstops, interestingly, the trend is the opposite as it goes from 34% to 30% and 32% to 31%, and for third baseman its pretty steady at 27% to 27% and 24% to 26%. Although a smaller percentage of fielded balls, the differences are significant for bunts when there is a runner on first since the vast majority of such attempts are sacrifice bunts instead of bunt hit attempts which have a higher success rate. The end result, Im hoping, is a higher correlation with UZR for first baseman. I have not, however, taken into consideration the ability of first baseman to catch throws from infielders.

Changed the partitioning rules for which balls are assigned to first and third baseman. In the past I was partitioning all balls in the shared areas of responsibility except for middle infielders all line drives that resulted in extra base hits. Now I also exclude bunts from the calculation as well and assign all extra base hits on ground balls to left field to the third baseman and all extra base hits on grounders to right to the first baseman on the assumption that theyre hit down the line. I also no longer partition any fly balls or line drives to the outfield since by doing so we didnt seem to be adding much information to what we already knew. Finally, in the last column on the subject I noted that I used a 50/50 split on ground balls up the middle. After the article was submitted, however, I realized that there is a simple way to partition balls between the short and second area of responsibility following the same principle outlined in the column. That change has been made.

While I havent re-run the correlations with UZR I did want to show a few results and so here are all infielders who were assigned 15 or more balls in 2007 in the National League Central. Youll notice that the range is smaller with Milwaukees infield not looking quite so terrible as in previous versions of the system.

Anonymous VS Scientology on More 4 news

After the 42 day win yesterday Tony Benn said:

I never thought I would be in the House of Commons on the day Magna Carta was repealed

. Then David Davis resigned saying this was the tipping point to a police state.

Which makes this analysis of the arrests being made and the influence being exerted on Anonymous by the Police that little bit more important than it would have been yesterday.

The next protest is tomorrow. If you want to protest find out more here.

Antiques More

Looking for something to do this weekend – November 13th - 15th? The Theta Charity Antique Show is here, starting with Thursday’s Gala Preview Party.

Here are the dates & times of the show:

Please note – the venue has changed this year!!

The show is being held at:

BAYOU CITY EVENT CENTER

9401 KNIGHT ROAD
HOUSTON, TEXAS 77045

The Theta Charity Antique Show is considered one of the top three antique shows in the country. If you love antiques, it is truly an event not to be missed. Events scheduled this year include the following speakers:

Robert Edsel, Cynthia Brumback, Bettie Bearden Pardee, Rebecca Rabinow, Lindsey Herod, Jane Osborne, Ben Johnston, Bob Wakefield, Courtnay Tartt Elias, and William Stubbs.

For more information about the Theta show – visit their web site HERE.

This beautiful, white stucco house, located in Houston, is featured this month in Luxe Magazine. Designed by Cote de Texas favorite Ashley Goforth, it was purchased by a couple who were moving down south from New York City. The six year old house, designed by architect Travis Mattingly, features a central hall with public rooms set off on each side of it. The couple kept the classic elements found inside: dark hardwoods and the white Calacutta marble.

Bringing only their art collection with them, the couple moved without furniture, leaving it up to Ashley to furnish and accessorize the large house – all within a short seven months. Since the owners were moving from a cosmopolitan city, she chose a contemporary style for the house, blending in antiques with custom pieces to create a unique and sophisticated environment.

The article features gorgeous photography by Nick Johnson – with even more photos found on the web site HERE.

Enjoy!

The entry reveals Ashley Goforth’s sophisticated scheme with its contemporary light fixture and trendy gilt center table which Ashley designed and topped with modern accessories. The walls are white with taupe-gray moldings – an element that was original to the house.

Modern lines fill the living room, while traditional urns, silk curtains, and antique candlesticks warm the interior.

The taupe silk curtains pick up the same shade found in the texture rug – which becomes the color scheme for the room, with accents of black.

The dining room is a beautiful mix of new and old – Ashley’s forte! I love the crystal chandelier mixed with contemporary tufted chairs, table, and faux bois rug mixed with the antique buffet. The art work sets the color scheme in the room. Just beautiful!

The library is a study in gray. Love the art work – a contemporary coin. All the art work is fabulous – I wish I knew who the artists were to tell you!! Perhaps they are listed in the magazine, but not on the web site? I’m sure if you are particularly interested in a piece, call Ashley for the artist’s name.

A detail of the library shelves.

Love, love, love the family room – a mix of gray pinstripes and camel. The upholstery is contemporary and is juxtaposed with a rustic wood coffee table and a moderne console. I love how Ashley mixed all the stripes with the zebra stripes. This is really a pretty room – with the rafters and French windows and painted gray paneled door.

The classically designed kitchen with white marble and subway tiles. The antique convex mirror is a surprise in gold.

The breakfast room features modern furniture and fabrics – a nice mix to the classic kitchen. Love the doorknobs. Notice the bar area is painted dark with dark subway tile – a striking contrast to the white countertops in the kitchen. I wonder what is on the opposite side of this area – where the light fixture is centered on what looks like an opening?

The guest room is a trademark of Ashley Goforth’s – black walls, white linens, contemporary lines mixed with gilt antiques.

The Yves Klein blue pillows are a perfect choice against the black walls and white linens.

And, another beautiful house from the talented Ashley Goforth. For more information on Ashley, go HERE.

Congratulations to Ashley on being published in the prestigious Luxe!!!
