Almost

Well, this has me scratching my head. On an apparently slow news day in Bloomington Illinois the headline read:

Ex-Twin City woman almost went to store in Omaha shooting

You know thats got to be a must-read. Anyway, the story begins...

OMAHA, Neb. -- If Wednesday had been typical, former Twin City resident Sally Elliott probably would have been shopping at the Von Maur where a gunman killed nine people, including himself, and wounded five others.

Von Maur in Westroads Mall at Omaha, Neb., is her favorite store, and she can be found there most Wednesdays for markdown day.

Knowing she came so close to being there when the shooting happened made her angry and uncomfortable, she said. And at least for now, it has made her hesitant to go back.

“Von Maur is honestly the only store I ever go to — it always has everything I want,” she said, adding “I don’t know if I’ll go next week.”

One wonder why she wont go next week. Does she think its likely that a gunman will be there again? And as if its not enough that they subject their readers to pointless articles like this, the woman isnt even a resident of the area. It boggles the mind.

Almost Made It

Damn. This cup survived the trip from New York to San Francisco to Honolulu. And then as Im looking for something in my suitcase I set a bag down too hard and I heard the ominous "clink."

Almost French Richmond

A baguette is very French. A scrambled egg and bacon roll is not very French. So I guess it makes sense to describe a scrambled egg and bacon baguette as almost French. And it was an obvious choice for breakfast at Almost French, 138 Swan Street, Richmond, Tel +61 3 9429 2080. Très très yummy.



The quality of the baguette made all the difference to this take-away breakfast. Light and crispy on the outside. Soft, fresh and ever so slightly chewy on the inside. And stuffed with scrambled eggs and a generous amount of crispy bacon through a slit along the spine. I was a little concerned that their re-heating technique might ruin everything (part microwave, part toaster-oven), but it worked just fine.

More bakery than cafe, there are, nonetheless, a handful of small cafe tables for dining in, from which you can admire the handiwork of local celebrity Mirka Mora. You might even get a chance to admire Mirka herself. She popped in for some bread while I was there.
