Alia Bhatt moves into her new abode posts pic of her first night there

Alia Bhatt moves into her new abode posts pic of her first night there

Alia Bhatt is the gen next star, and the millennials look upto her. Just at the age 0f 23, she is now a proud owner of a lavish and designed to taste flat in Juhu. You can be all jealous of the fact, or take some inspiration – your choice- but the actress has finally inaugurated her new abode. Yep! After spending 2 years getting it just right, and featuring on the popular magazine Architectural Digest, the actress has moved into her new home with sister Shaheen Bhatt. She posted a picture from the flat on her Instagram, and captioned it “And finally night number 1 at the new home @shaheenb ( we did it)”. Congratulations to the two ladies! Alia is currently riding high on the success of her latest film Dear Zindagi.

The interior designer who has done a fantastic job of providing the rich look to Alia’s new flat is no one else but Richa Bahl. She is the wife of Alia’s Shaandaar director Vikas Bahl. Thanks to her, Alia’s new home featured on the October 2016 issue of AD.

Untitled-2-1

Alia’s bachelorette pad is quite close her parents’ home. “It’s all very new and unexplored for me. All my life, I’ve lived with my parents. Now I need my own place. I made sure I got a place very close to my parents’ home. You step out of my old home and you step into the new home.” she told a leading daily, back in June 2015. Mahesh Bhatt, her father, was not very fond of the idea of her moving out. Alia revealed that to the news daily. “He was like. ‘Why do you have to move out? Why do you need your own place when you’ve all the privacy that you need right here in this house?’ When I tried to convince him that I had to find my own place he insisted that there must be a room for him in my new home. I’ve tried to explain to him that I am just a breath away. But he is unconvinced. I guess dads will be dads.” she said.

Alia revealed in her interview with AD that she is a tea person and hence there was specific instructions to put up a tea bar in the house. But funnily, and interestingly, there is a hip flask on the bar counter that reads, “I didn’t text you, vodka texted you”. So be sure that Alia will definitely have more than just tea to offer her friends when they come over.

“I told Richa I didn’t want it to be too modern. I wanted it to feel a little old, with a New York loft kind of feel. And I didn’t want anything overtly glamorous, like chandeliers, or marble floors.” Alia said in the interview. Here are a few pictures of Alia’s awesome new abode!

Announcing two new series

Announcing two new series

In addition to the already running Ton of Protein series, I would like to announce two more. They are

1. Indian Winter : Indian Winter ? Whats that?, you might wonder. We know Indian Summer, but winter...does it even exist? Well, yes. Although it isnt as *wintery* as the winters outside the tropics, it sure does exist. This month, we have already had a minimum temperature of 10.1°C here in Pune. Now you are convinced, arent you? :)
So, what will this series have? Basically, I will blog about vegetables and preparations that are typical to winter here. How the series develops in the course of time will have to be seen.

2. The Unbeatable Root : I plan to paint the town red with this one. :)
Leaving wordplay aside (Did I hear you say Thank God!?), this series will feature recipes with the Beetroot.

Hope you like them both.

Amnesty International Launches New Online Campaign for Albert Woodfox Please Take Action

Amnesty International Launches New Online Campaign for Albert Woodfox Please Take Action

Please take action here!

Today Amnesty International launched an online campaign asking Louisiana Attorney General James Caldwell to not appeal the District Courts ruling to either release or retry Albert Woodfox, declaring: "After decades of injustice, let the Angola 3 ruling stand!"

Please support Albert by taking action, forwarding it to your email list and asking your networks to spread the word. Now is a critical time in the fight for Alberts freedom. We want Caldwells office to be inundated with emails so he hears it loud and clear that the cycle of injustice and cruelty must end.

Introducing their online action campaign, Amnesty writes:

Albert Woodfox has spent nearly 41 years in solitary confinement in conditions that are cruel, inhuman and degrading. In 1972, he and two others were convicted of murdering a guard at Angola prison. The "Angola 3" were sentenced to life imprisonment - although no physical evidence linked them to the crime and serious legal flaws came to light.
Albert Woodfoxs conviction has been overturned several times, but Louisiana Attorney General Caldwell has dogmatically appealed every ruling in Woodfoxs favor. On February 26, a federal district court ruled again to overturn the conviction. Call on Attorney General Caldwell not to appeal the ruling so that Woodfox can be retried or released.

Below is the full text of the email to AG Caldwell:

On February 26, Albert Woodfoxs conviction for the 1972 murder of a prison guard was overturned once again, this time on the basis of racial discrimination in the selection of the grand jury foreperson. I know that you have already indicated that you intend to appeal the ruling, but I write to you today with one simple request - make history. Let the federal district courts ruling stand.

The courts ruling lends weight to widespread concerns that there have been significant flaws in the legal processes that have kept both Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace behind bars. These flaws include inadequate legal counsel, prosecutorial misconduct, lack of physical evidence, potentially exculpatory evidence lost by the State, evidence that the key eyewitness testimony was paid for in bribes by the State, other eyewitnesses retracting their testimony, and now racial discrimination. To appeal this latest ruling would compound injustice and delay the legal process by years, as the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals would have to rule before justice could be served.

I am also deeply concerned that, since his conviction, Albert Woodfox has been held in conditions that can only be described as cruel, inhuman and degrading. He has been denied access to work, group activities and rehabilitation programs. The negative physical and psychological effects of these conditions have taken a heavy toll on the 66 year old.

The State should move to either retry Albert Woodfox, or to release him. To delay the legal process by appealing this ruling would be both cruel and unnecessary. Please break the cycle of injustice and cruelty. Let the ruling stand.

(Featured below is the full text of Amnestys earlier statement, released the day of Albert Woodfoxs ruling.)

PRESS RELEASE

State of Louisiana Must Not Appeal Federal Ruling Overturning Conviction in Angola 3 Case

Contact: Suzanne Trimel, strimel@aiusa.org, 212-633-4150, @AIUSAmedia

(BATON ROUGE) – Amnesty International called on Louisiana Attorney General James Caldwell today not to appeal a federal court ruling overturning the conviction of Albert Woodfox of the ‘Angola 3’ for the second-degree murder of a prison guard in 1972. Amnesty International has raised serious human rights concerns over the case for many years.

In a ruling on Tuesday, Judge James Brady of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana found that racial discrimination lay behind the under-representation of African- Americans selected to serve as grand jury forepersons in the jurisdiction in which Woodfox, 66, who is African-American, was retried after his original conviction was overturned in 1992.

Judge Brady found that the state had failed to meet its burden “to dispel the inference of intentional discrimination” indicated by the statistical evidence covering a 13-year period from 1980 to 1993 presented by Albert Woodfox’s lawyers. The state, Judge Brady found, had failed to show “racially neutral” reasons to explain the under- representation of African-Americans selected as grand jury foreperson during this period.

Woodfox was convicted in 1973 along with a second prisoner, Herman Wallace, of the murder of Brent Miller. This conviction was overturned in 1992, but Woodfox was re-indicted by grand jury in 1993 and convicted again at a 1998 trial, and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1999. In 2008, a U.S. District Court ruled that Woodfox had been denied his right to adequate assistance of counsel during the 1998 trial and should either be retried or set free. The court also found that evidence presented by Woodfox’s lawyers of discrimination in the selection of the grand jury foreperson warranted a federal evidentiary hearing. While the State appealed the District court for a retrial – and won – yesterday’s ruling from the evidentiary hearing, once again sees the conviction overturned.

Amnesty International has repeatedly expressed concern that many legal aspects of this case are troubling: no physical evidence links Woodfox and Wallace to the murder, potentially exculpatory DNA evidence was lost by the state, and their conviction was based on questionable testimony – much of which subsequently retracted by witnesses. In recent years, evidence has emerged that the main eyewitness was bribed by prison officials into giving statements against the men. Both men have robustly denied over the years any involvement in the murder.

Woodfox has been held since his conviction over 40 years ago in solitary confinement. The extremely harsh conditions he has endured, including being confined for 23 hours a day, inadequate access to exercise, social interaction and no access to work, education, or rehabilitation have had physical and psychological consequences. Throughout his incarceration, Woodfox has been denied any meaningful review of the reasons for being kept in isolation; and records indicate that he hasn’t committed any disciplinary infractions for decades, nor, according to prison mental health records, is he a threat to himself or others. Amnesty International has repeatedly called on the authorities that both he and Wallace be removed from such conditions which the organization believes can only be described as cruel, inhuman and degrading.

"The fact that Woodfox’s conviction has been overturned again gives weight to Amnesty Internationals longstanding concerns that the original legal process was flawed," said Tessa Murphy, an Amnesty researcher.

Amnesty International is a Nobel Peace Prize-winning grassroots activist organization with more than 3 million supporters, activists, and volunteers in more than 150 countries campaigning for human rights worldwide. The organization investigates and exposes abuses, educates and mobilizes the public, and works to protect people wherever justice, freedom, truth, and dignity are denied.

An Unfortunate Tipping Point and the Hope of New Positve One

An Unfortunate Tipping Point and the Hope of New Positve One

I recently read a review of Fear Itself by Ira Katznelson in Christian Century. The book is about the New Deal under Franklin D. Roosevelt and how it impacted our present times. It is on my to order list for my Kindle.

There is one section of this review that caught my eye and imagination. It had to do with the impact of the New Deal on the domestic front in relation to economics and the roll the South played in how the New Deal unrolled; a tipping point* in our history. (The author also believes that the New Deal pulled the world back from the brink of disaster.)

In the early and most radical part of the New Deal southern congressional members were convinced that the status quo of the racial order had to be maintained along with the expanding role of the federal oversight of the economy. As a result large numbers of African-Americans were not part of the new regulations. Regional autonomy was also emphasized.

This is the interesting part that Kratznelson concludes; that if the South had voted differently or had fewer votes “the United States might have ended up looking more like the European-style social democracy” with more of a commitment to the common good.

I have wondered over the years why European countries seem far more socially progressive in terms of social welfare systems than we are. This may well in part explain our differences and why we often seem so backward in social programs and have gone to a troublesome time, which we now see.

Our current do-nothing legislature in the past year did nothing about reforming immigration laws, tax reform, climate change or raising minimum wage. This congress has done less that any congress for 40 years.

We see some changes on the horizon that may make us a more socially responsible country; progressive voices seem to be finding their voice despite the undue influence of the wealthy power brokers in this country and currently make congress their toadies.

On a side note and a positive note, is the election of Pope Francis. I noted the other day a TV commentator saying that this pope is spending less time on social issues and more on the issues of the poor. It was a dumb statement. Those issues of the poor are social issues. What the commentator was trying to say is that this pope is not highlighting infighting in organized religion about entrenched doctrines that hurt people, but accenting the teachings of Jesus as found in the Sermon on the Mount/Plain. This is a social action Pope with his priorities clear on the teachings of Jesus that is paramount in our care for each other and our connections with each other.

While our human nature I believe tends to drag us down and splinter humans into a dog eat dog mentality with the result of uncontrolled capitalism created vast differences between the wealthy and others. I also belief that God lifts up leaders that guide us to a more enlightened and positive path, such as Pope Francis. We also hear the social gospel in the progressives of our era such as Bill Moyers and Robert Reich, to name a couple. This folk call us back to accountability and equality and the pursuit of happiness that all may pursue, not just a privileged few. May this be the new tipping point of our future.

*Tipping point is a concept developed by sociologist Morton Drodzins and later expanded by Tomas Schelling meaning when a group rapidly and dramatically changes behavior by widely adopting a new practice. Malcom Gladwell wrote a book in 2000 which mainly deals with economic moments.

And So The New Decor At The White House Begins!

And So The New Decor At The White House Begins!

Everyone has a favorite color.  Mine is probably a soft blue.  Yours?   We all know that President Trump loves the color of golden yellow.  From his gold spun hair to the elevators at Trump Tower to the gold plated seat belts on his Trump Jet – for whatever reason, Trump loves the color of gold!  Maybe it stems from being Scottish and having a head of white hair as a child.

Aww – now, THIS is a cute little towhead baby!   Precious!

Regardless of where his love of gold comes from, judging from his penthouse at Trump Tower – he definitely has the Midas touch!

Because the Obamas had just revealed,  via Architectural Digest, their White House decor that the staid decorator Michael Smith had created for them, the public is now very curious about what changes Donald and Melania have in mind for the White House.

The Michael S. Smith designed master bedroom at the White House – with just a hint of gold on the walls. Will the Trumps like this decor?  It’s so hard to say.  It is a fancy look, but there’s not much bling here.  Melania has said that she loves the way her penthouse is decorated.  It is exactly her taste, she said in an interview, even though it was designed by Trump and his first wife.  If you are interested in the White House decor, you are wondering what rooms will the Trumps keep as is, and what will they redecorate, ASAP?

I doubt the Trumps will make many changes on the first floor with all the state rooms like the Blue Room, the Green Room and the Red Room.   The State Dining Room was just updated by the Obamas for the first time in years.  But, I do have a feeling the Trumps may change the Family Dining Room as soon as they can.  It seems so far removed from their style.  I’m not sure I would mind a change myself – this was my least favorite of the Smith decorated rooms:

The Family Dining Room:  The rust curtains and contemporary rug seem so far from the Trump aesthetic – it will be interesting to see if they will keep it, despite the fact that it was just redone. They could put in a pretty gold-toned damask wallpaper, along with a similar fabric on the curtains and chairs.  A Fortuny-like fabric would be beautiful in here.  The furniture would stay – it’s been in this room for over a century.  The art work by Alma Thomas between the windows was purchased for the White House – the first art work in the house collection by an African American woman.

And who will be their decorator?  Will they use the team that decorates their hotels or will they pick a new, more well-known name like Suzanne Kasler or Suzanne Rheinstein?

Ivanka Trump used Kelly Behun to create her ultra-chic apartment.   It will be so exciting to watch what happens – but I just hope the Trumps won’t make us wait to see their changes as long as the Obamas did!!!!!

Leading up to the election, the internet was filled with memes making fun of the various candidates and their hopes of winning the White House.  I love this one of Hillary measuring the drapes, a bit early, in the oval office.

And here, behind the famous Resolute Desk in the Oval House.

Even Bernie Sanders wasn’t immune – he was teased about turning the White House into a hippie commune (I guess?)  This meme place Bernie inside the Clinton oval office.

And of course, Trump is easy to tease – just throw in a bit of gold and there’s your meme.

And so, today, on the day of the inauguration, I was finishing up a new blog story that I’ve been writing when I suddenly hear that President Trump has already remolded the White House!   What?!?!  He just moved in this afternoon!

But sure enough, he has already made a few changes to the Oval Office and some of them are very ironic.

So, I quickly put this story together about the Oval Office and its changes.

In 1909, William Howard Taft created the first Oval Office when he moved the President’s Office from what is now called the Lincoln Bedroom to the EOB.   Taft took over a secretary’s office space that was a half-oval, which he extended into a full oval, just as the Blue Room and Yellow Oval Room were.  The curtains were silk velvet and the floor was wood in a checkerboard pattern.   Taft chose a green color scheme for the room, which remained for decades.  The curtains lasted a long time too.

Presidents Wilson, Harding, and Coolidge all worked in the same oval office which mostly looked the same as this one seen in 1927.  In 1929 a fire destroyed the office and it was rebuilt for Herbert Hoover.

In 1933, FDR moved the Oval Office to its present location in the SE corner of the newly expanded West Wing – so that he could more easily reach it in his wheelchair.  It was built 2 ft wider and longer than its previous size.   Since 1934, the office has not changed much except in decor.  What has stayed in the room since 1934 is the marble mantel, moved from the original 1909 office and the two flags placed behind the desk.  Here is FDR’s office seen in 1945 with the same curtains as in the older offices.  The blue-green rug was later used by all the presidents until Nixon ordered the first custom made Oval Office rug

Truman originally used FDR’s decor, but in 1947, he introduced a modern look to his office along with new green curtains.

The doors to the Rose Garden in the new Oval Office.

President Eisenhower kept much of the green decor, changing mostly the art work.

The beautiful marble mantel was moved from the old oval office to the new West Wing Oval Office.  Eisenhower’s landscapes were a departure from the portraits of the Presidents that were hanging before.

John Kennedy originally kept FDR’s green rug and curtains.  Jacqueline brought the Resolute desk into the Oval Office for the President to use.  After his death, it was on tour and at the Smithsonian until Jimmy Carter began using the desk again.  Since him, it has been used by many presidents.

After the President left for Dallas, his office was remodeled with a royal red rug and new white curtains with red trim!  Love that!  But, I can’t help but think the shades should have been hung higher!

This console table has been used since the Oval Office fire.  It is still used by most presidents, including the Bushes, Clinton, and Obama.  Notice the floor – at this time, it was cork.   IKE’s golf cleats ruined the cork and it was later replaced by LBJ who put down linoleum in the Oval Office.  Linoleum in the Oval Office – I swear!!!!

Here, white slipcovered sofas with twin bronze ash trays!  Notice all the nautical paintings and models.   John  Kennedy never saw his newly decorated office nor did his wife.  It was dismantled before she came back to Washington.   The decorator was Stéphane Boudin.

President Lyndon Johnson originally used the Kennedy red rug and sofa.  He added a larger coffee table.

Later, LBJ removed the red rug and replaced it with the FDR green rug, along with new green velvet pillows.  He did use the same JFK curtains. He added a modern 3 screen TV to watch the news.  LBJ did not use the Resolute desk, but instead had the Senate cabinet shop build him a new desk to fit his long legs.

I think LBJ would love to be alive today with the 24/7 news and all the TV channels and the internet and tweeting.  I think he would love all of that!!  The Johnson family owned the popular radio station KLBJ for decades and they also put the first TV station on air in Austin in 1952.  The family eventually sold their holdings.

Nixon originally used the FDR rug. It must have been so dirty by then!!  He kept the white curtains but added a new green trim.

Later, in what was to become a new tradition – Pat Nixon ordered a custom rug in blue and gold.  She also added gold chairs and curtains, creating a very stately office.  Besides Jimmy Carter, all further presidents have ordered their own custom rug and decor.

President Gerald Ford first used Nixon’s decor, then ordered a completely new look in yellow.  It looks like this was a temporary rug until his new one arrived.

The Carters reused the Fords new decor.  They also had a very unusual furniture arrangement with two sofas back to back.  I love this decor and color scheme.  Here, the new rug is in place.  You can see the plain linoleum that LBJ had installed to replace the ruined cork floors.

Here the Carters eat in front of the fireplace.  Actually, I kind of like this furniture arrangement.  I love the decor with the gold damask and yellow striped sofas.

Another view of the Ford/Carter decor with PM Golda Meir.  It’s incredible to think of all the world leaders who have visited this office!!
