After 41 years in solitary confinement, Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace of the Angola 3 have lived through a nightmare that no human being should have to endure. We work on their case with the hope that, one day, we can share the news that these men have been released from solitary and have seen justice.
But today is not that day. Today I am deeply saddened to tell you that 71-year-old Herman Wallace has been diagnosed with liver cancer, after spending the majority of his life isolated in a small cell, four steps long, by three steps across for 23 hours a day. I’ve often described the Angola 3 case as “injustice compounded” – that description has never rung more true than today.
Albert and Herman were convicted of murdering a prison guard at Louisiana’s Angola prison more than four decades ago. The two men were placed in solitary confinement and kept there, even as significant flaws in their trial rose to the surface from the dark, racially charged underbelly of the US prison system: potentially exculpatory evidence mysteriously “missing,” the retraction of eyewitness testimony and even compelling proof that the state bribed a key eyewitness.
On February 26, 2013, a federal district court ruled to put an end to this shameful legacy of injustice, overturning the conviction of Albert Woodfox for the third time. Louisiana’s attorney general appealed the ruling, however, so Albert’s case is still pending in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Herman’s case is also under Federal Court scrutiny on the basis of prosecutorial conduct and constitutional violations – but as the wheels of justice grind slowly, Herman’s time is running out.
Herman’s condition is grave and we are still waiting for details of his prognosis. Once we know more, we will ask you to make your voices heard to the Louisiana authorities so that our calls for justice ring from the state’s northern border to the very end of the Mississippi river.
But until then, please join me in reminding Herman and Albert that they are not alone – that there are hundreds of thousands of people standing with them, even as the state tries to keep them in total isolation.

Albert and Herman are held in two different prisons, so please be sure to write to both of them separately – Albert is struggling with the news of his friend’s illness, so he needs your words of support just as much as Herman.

Apple and raisin muffins with streusel topping
As mentioned before Ive been baking a LOT with apples these past few weeks. These muffins came about as I had 1 ripe banana and some apples to use up. I started with a banana and apple muffin and decided to add in raisins, nuts, spice and a streusel topping. The result was a wonderfully delicious and fragrant muffin which made for a perfect breakfast on the go.

Great breakfast with a nice cup of tea Makes 15 muffins
For the streusel topping
25g flour
85 demerara sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
50g cold butter
25g pecans, chopped
For the muffins
100g brown sugar
50g caster sugar
220g plain flour
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 teaspoon mixed spice
60mls milk
1 ripe banana
80mls vegetable oil
2 large free range eggs
1 pot (165g) Muller light banana and custard yoghurt (or vanilla or apple flavour)
2 apples, peeled, cored and roughly chopped
100g raisins
75g pecans, roughly chopped
- Preheat the oven to 180C.
- Line 2 muffin trays with 15 muffin liners.
- Make the streusel topping by mixing all the ingredients in a bowl by hand. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, mix the sugars, flour, bicarbonate, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and mixed spice.
- In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs and add in the mashed bananas, vegetable oil, milk ad yoghurt.
- Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the wet ingredients. Stir until just mixed.
- Add in the apples, raisins and pecans and mix.
- Divide the mixture evenly between the muffin cases.
- Top with streusel topping and bake in the pre heated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and a skewer insertedinto the centre comes out clean.
- Allow to cool in the tray for a few minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

UPDATE: Read Amnestys statement released for the Feb. 25, 2013 CA State hearing on SHUs (w/ protest rally outside organized by anti-SHU activists): Proposed reforms will not alleviate the inhumanity of conditions in Security Housing Units in California’s prisons.
In the Summer of 2011, prisoners held inside the Pelican Bay SHU initiated a multi-racial hunger strike that began on July 1 and spread throughout California’s prisons. While the Pelican Bay strikers declared victory on July 20, other prisoners around the states continued for up to several weeks longer. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that at least 6,600 prisoners in at least one third of California’s 33 prisons participated in the hunger strike. Ending the use of prolonged solitary confinement was one of the strike’s five core demands.
Last week, on October 10, following a public call to end racial hostilities among California prisoners, another hunger strike was initiated at Pelican Bay, with 500 prisoners statewide participating, according to the CDCR.
Tessa Murphy is the campaigner for the USA team at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. She has provided the research for and worked on Amnestys reports on supermax prisons and solitary confinement through her visits to a number of prisons, including the recent visit to California SHUs as part of the team that published the report cited above, entitled The Edge of Endurance. She also authored Amnestys special report on the Angola 3, entitled USA: 100 years in solitary: ‘The Angola 3’ and their fight for justice.
A3N: In our introduction to this interview, we cite several key aspects of the recent Amnesty International report about SHUs in California. As someone who visited these prisons as part of the Amnesty delegation, what did you learn about them first hand that perhaps can’t be conveyed in a written report? What did the SHUs feel like?

“California Department of Corrections/PBSP-SHU policies and practices, have violated our human rights and subjected us to torture – for the purpose of coercing inmates into becoming informants against other inmates, etc., for the state,” writes one prisoner held in solitary at California’s infamous supermax Pelican Bay State Prison. This excerpt of his letter to the internationally renowned human rights organization, Amnesty International, is featured in Amnesty’s new report on the use of prolonged solitary confinement inside California’s ‘Security Housing Units’ (SHUs), entitled The Edge of Endurance: Conditions in California’s Security Housing Units.
The Amnesty report states that “no other US state is believed to have held so many prisoners for such long periods in indefinite isolation.” At least 3,000 California prisoners are being held today in an extreme form of solitary confinement known as “super maximum” custody. Furthermore, the CDCR reported in 2011 that over 500 prisoners had spent over ten years in the Pelican Bay SHU, with 78 having spent over 20 years there. Explaining the recent emergence of SHUs, Amnesty writes that “California was at the forefront of moves to toughen penalties, and its prison population escalated during the 1980s and 1990s following the introduction of some of the nation’s harshest sentencing laws. Once a leader in the philosophy of rehabilitation, California also passed legislation which expressly described punishment rather than rehabilitation as the central aim of imprisonment. Pelican Bay SHU, which opened in 1989, was one of the first super-maximum security facilities specifically designed to be ‘non- programming,’ that is, constructed with no communal space for recreation, education or any other group activity.”
In the Summer of 2011, prisoners held inside the Pelican Bay SHU initiated a multi-racial hunger strike that began on July 1 and spread throughout California’s prisons. While the Pelican Bay strikers declared victory on July 20, other prisoners around the states continued for up to several weeks longer. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that at least 6,600 prisoners in at least one third of California’s 33 prisons participated in the hunger strike. Ending the use of prolonged solitary confinement was one of the strike’s five core demands.
“Following concern among prisoners about what they perceived as a lack of progress in implementing changes, the hunger strike resumed briefly in late September 2011, but was called off after meetings between prisoner representatives and CDCR and further assurances that CDCR would institute changes. While no disciplinary action had been taken against the first hunger strikers, the second hunger strike was treated by CDCR as a major rule violation and some prisoners were punished by having their property and canteen privileges confiscated. Fifteen of the strike leaders were reportedly moved to harsh conditions in administrative segregation cells for a short period,” writes Amnesty International in their new report.
The CDCR has responded to the striking prisoners’ demands with their own proposals. Amnesty critiques the CDCR’s proposed reforms, arguing that “the reforms do not go far enough. There are continuing concerns about both the fairness of the procedures for assigning prisoners to what could still be indefinite SHU terms, and about the length of time in which prisoners will remain in solitary confinement…. While measures to reduce the number of prisoners held in security housing units are a positive step, in Amnesty International’s view the proposals should ensure that only prisoners who present a clear and present threat, who cannot be safely housed in a less secure setting are assigned to the SHU. Given the serious consequences of SHU confinement, the authorities should ensure that STG [Security Threat Group] validations are based on a thorough and impartial investigation, and only with concrete evidence of gang-related activity posing such a clear and present threat; that prisoners have a fair opportunity to contest the evidence; and that such decisions are subject to regular, meaningful review.”
When these concerns were raised “during Amnesty International’s meetings with CDCR staff in November 2011, the department stressed that there were inmates in the SHU with serious gang connections, but acknowledged that they ‘over-validated’ and that there were prisoners in the SHU who did not warrant such a restrictive level of housing. CDCR also acknowledged that there were people assigned to the SHU as gang associates who had no direct role in gang activity. CDCR stated that the reforms under consideration were aimed at making the system fairer as well as targeting resources more effectively, taking into account the high cost of SHU confinement and the need to manage a tight budget. Amnesty International was told that the process would ultimately reduce the SHU population to ensure that only prisoners who could not be safely housed in a less secure setting would be assigned to the SHU.”
The bottom line of this important new report: “Amnesty International considers that the conditions of isolation and other deprivations imposed on prisoners in California’s SHU units breach international standards on humane treatment, and that prolonged or indefinite isolation, and the severe social and environmental deprivation existing in Pelican Bay SHU in particular, constitutes cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment in violation of international law.”
Unfortunately, getting the US to respect international law is not as clear-cut as the act of documenting human rights violations. Notably, The Edge of Endurance explains: “The USA has sought to limit the application of international human rights law in its conduct by entering reservations to article 7 of the ICCPR [International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights] and article 16 of the Convention against Torture as a condition of ratifying the treaties. The reservations state that the US considers itself bound by the articles only to the extent that ‘cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment’ means the ‘cruel and unusual treatment or punishment’ prohibited under the US Constitution. Amnesty International has repeatedly called on the USA to withdraw its reservations as defeating the object and purpose of the treaties in question and therefore incompatible with international law.”
Last week, on October 10, following a public call to end racial hostilities among California prisoners, another hunger strike was initiated at Pelican Bay, with 500 prisoners statewide participating, according to the CDCR.
Tessa Murphy is the campaigner for the USA team at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International. She has provided the research for and worked on Amnestys reports on supermax prisons and solitary confinement through her visits to a number of prisons, including the recent visit to California SHUs as part of the team that published the report cited above, entitled The Edge of Endurance. She also authored Amnestys special report on the Angola 3, entitled USA: 100 years in solitary: ‘The Angola 3’ and their fight for justice.
A3N: In our introduction to this interview, we cite several key aspects of the recent Amnesty International report about SHUs in California. As someone who visited these prisons as part of the Amnesty delegation, what did you learn about them first hand that perhaps can’t be conveyed in a written report? What did the SHUs feel like?
TM: It is hard to convey the sense of desolation in the SHUs. From the moment you step foot in the SHU, the senses are assailed by artificial lights, stale air and muted silence.
Off long drab corridors, prisoners are isolated from each other in pods of eight cells; these pods are self-contained with a shower and recreation yard, so that, with few exceptions, they rarely leave the pod.
This bleak environment of tiny windowless cells where little natural light infiltrates, few personal possessions, no programming to offset the boredom, out of cell time in ‘outdoor’ yard with a view of a patch of sky, minimum human contact, and a view out of the cell of a dirty white wall is the totality of the prisoners world.
A3N: Accounts of the prisoners themselves are featured throughout your report. When it came to deciding which topics to focus on in your report, to what extent were you influenced by the striking Pelican Bay prisoners?
TM: AIs report on California is part of a body of work on conditions in prison isolation units in the USA; including Arizona, and Texas as being of particular concern. When we began our research into conditions in California’s SHUs, a number of issues became apparent very quickly; First that there were a large number of inmates who had been held in the SHU for very long periods of time, secondly, that the majority of inmates in the SHU were being placed there for alleged gang affiliation/membership, thirdly, that there was no step-down system to allow these individuals to transition out of the SHU, and fourthly that physical conditions, particularly in Pelican Bay, were very harsh. Based on this initial research, the organization requested access to California SHU units before the prisoners initiated the hunger strikes.
When the strike began, we were contacted by members of the mediation group who made us aware of the prisoners’ demands. During the course of researching the report, we were in close contact with the mediation team, as well as families and friends of inmates held in the SHUs, as well as with lawyers, as well as state employees, including legislators as well as grass roots groups. Of course, we also sought information from CDCR.
A3N: The Amnesty report states that “the growth of super-maximum security facilities has been linked to the huge rise in the numbers of people incarcerated in the USA from the late 1970s onwards, together with a shift away from rehabilitation as a goal of imprisonment to more emphasis on punishment and control.” Can you say more about how mass incarceration and prolonged solitary confinement relate to each other? Why did they rise together?
TM: The prison population in the USA has quadrupled since 1980; this has come about due not to rising crime but to harsher sentencing policies that emanated out of a "get tough on crime" attitude pervasive in the 90s, such as three-strikes law, truth in sentencing laws, as well as mandatory minimums.
Supermaximum prisons were borne out of this need by elected officials need to be seen to be tough on crime, as well as to respond to the needs of an increasingly overcrowded prison system. The first such prison to be built, designed with social and environment deprivation inbuilt was SMU 1 in Eyman State prison in Arizona, this was the prototype for Pelican Bay Prison, built in 1989. Many states followed in building their own supermax prison, and many retrofitted current prisons to supermax criteria of holding prisoners in isolation with minimum social interaction for prolonged periods.
States rationalized the building of these prisons with the argument that only by the large scale isolation of the "worst of the worst" prisoners, could violence be controlled throughout the prison system. However, studies have shown that predatory violent prisoners are but a small proportion of those held in isolation, which is replete with individuals with mental illness, persistent rule breakers and those alleged to be in a gang.
A3N: With over 2.4 million prisoners today, the US now has the most total prisoners and the highest incarceration rate in the world. Much of the world has rightly condemned the US for the well-documented torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, but what do you think the state of human rights inside prisons within US borders says about the US?
TM: The US does have the highest incarceration rate of any country in the world. It also is the only country that uses prolonged isolation as a routine prison management tool in prisons built for this purpose. This reliance on long term isolation has profound consequences; first, it costs significantly more to house a prisoner in isolation than it does to house them in general population; secondly, the focus on punishment, rather than rehabilitation, that forms the backbone of this prison tool, has severely negative consequences on the prisoner—from mental and physical health, to their success in positively reintegrating back into society. So the costs on society are huge in both financial and other terms.
The conditions and policies of supermax prisons that affect over 30,000 prisoners across the country, falls short of international laws and treaties governing the humane treatment of prisoners, to which the US is a party. This casts a large shadow over any claim by the US administration that it is a champion of human rights.
A3N: In two previous interviews (1,2) we covered the case before the European Court of Human Rights, of Babar Ahmad and Others v The United Kingdom. Recently the Court ruled against the co-appellants, who are fighting extradition to the US on grounds that the US tortures prisoners, which writer Chris Hedges has argued, “removes one of the last external checks on our emerging gulag state.” What do you think is the significance of this Court ruling for the US, Europe, and beyond?
TM: Although the ruling denied the appeal, it conceded that there were circumstances in which prolonged incarceration in ADX could amount to a breach of Article 3. It accepted that there were sufficient safeguards in these particular cases on the basis of information provided the US government while largely disregarding the submissions provided by the lawyers for the applicants. We will be following the actual conditions under which these prisoners are held post-extradition. See this link to the statement AI issued last week.
In terms of the ruling having broader consequences for other cases, each new case that comes before the court will need to be examined on its specific facts and evidence. When it comes to obligation of non refoulement (no transfer to risk of human rights violations of different kinds) a large part of the analysis in each case is highly specific to the evidence in the particular case.
A3N: Shifting to another campaign you’ve worked on, why is Amnesty International calling forthe release of Albert Woodfox and Herman Wallace of the Angola 3 from solitary confinement?
TM: Amnesty has been working on the case of the A3 for over a decade; however it became a priority case in recent years when the focus of our work shifted to the issue of long term isolation in US prisons. Our support for the case rests on a number of issues: first that they have been held for such a long period in conditions of deprivation; that the process for reviewing their placement in these conditions is no more than a rubber stamping exercise by prison authorities; that serious questions exist about the legitimacy of the legal process - including the evidence used to convict them, the lack of DNA evidence to link them to the crime; and that their political beliefs may in part be responsible for their continued placement in solitary, and even for the charges originally brought against them.
Both men are in their late sixties, the decades of incarceration has debilitated them physically, they have no disciplinary violations, they have never demonstrated that they are a threat to the safety of the prison – or to others, or themselves (and this was confirmed by prison mental health staff). Do they conform to the definition of the “worst of the worst” predatory inmates for whom prolonged detention in solitary confinement is the only administrative option? No, far from it, and yet there they remain after 40 years.
A3N: How did Amnesty’s choose the title for the video-interview with Robert King, Slavery Still Reigns in US Prisons?
TM: The title comes from a quote by Robert that despite the abolition of slavery in the USA, the 13th Amendment legalizes slavery in US prisons.
A3N: Were you surprised that Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal refused to meet with the Amnesty International delegation that hand-delivered a 67,000 signature petition to his office on April 17, 2012?
TM: No, we weren’t surprised that he didn’t meet with the delegation as he hasn’t engaged at all with AI on this case. In July 2011, we wrote to him asking that we meet to discuss the case at the soonest possible opportunity. He chose not to respond.
A3N: AI responded to Gov. Jindal by launching a newer petition targeting James M. LeBlanc, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections. What was your strategic thinking behind targeting the Dept of corrections?
TM: Over the years, a number of statements have been made by authorities involved in this case that are not supported by evidence. This includes statements by Attorney General James Caldwell that Albert Woodfox is “the most dangerous man on the planet” as well as being a violent rapist. Albert’s prison conduct does not support Caldwell’s first statement, and Albert has never been charged with – let alone convicted of rape. And yet, Caldwell is not held to account for such assertions.
We decided to target James le Blanc because he issued a statement on the anniversary of Albert and Herman’s 40th year of incarceration, that they were being held separately from other prisoners to protect prison employees, other inmates and visitors. Yet neither man has had any serious prison infraction for decades, and the prison’s own mental health records indicate that neither man pose a threat to themselves or to others. So, we decided to hold Secretary Le Blanc to account, and ask him for the evidence behind this claim.
--To begin rectifying these human rights abuses, Amnesty is urging California authorities to:
- Limit the use of isolation units so that is it imposed only as a last resort in the case of prisoners whose behaviour constitutes a severe and ongoing threat to the safety of others.
- Improve conditions for all prisoners held in isolation units, including better exercise provision and an opportunity for more human contact for prisoners, even at the most restrictive custody levels.
- Allow prisoners in isolation units to make regular phone calls to their families.
- Reduce the length of the Step Down Program and providing meaningful access to programs where prisoners have an opportunity for some group contact and interaction with others at an earlier stage.
- Immediate removal from isolation of prisoners who have already spent years in those units.

This afternoon Albert Woodfoxs legal team submitted an application to US District Court Judge James A. Brady for release on bail with expedited review (View the court filing here).
This month marks 2 years since Alberts conviction was overturned for a third time based on a finding of racial discrimination in the selection of his grand jury foreperson, a decision now firmly upheld by a unanimous panel of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.
Though the Attorney General may continue to stand in the way of justice and appeal yet again to the US Supreme Court and/or attempt to retry him, Alberts attorneys argue that there is no legal or moral justification to hold him in prison any longer, nor any reason to believe the State of Louisiana could succeed in reconvicting him in a fair proceeding.
In a moving petition, they detail not just the legal underpinnings of freeing those wrongfully convicted, but also the deeply flawed legal processes that have resulted in this innocent man spending an unconscionable 4 decades in a solitary cell. As they point out, "the State has now had not just one but two chances to convict Mr. Woodfox at a trial that passes constitutional muster, and failed."
The application reminds the Court that the State itself during the appeals process admitted that if Albert were to prevail "re-trying him for a crime that occurred more than 40 years ago...may render retrial difficult, even impossible."
But regardless of whether the State elects to retry Albert or not, as another federal district court concluded, "[T]he liberty interest of an improperly convicted prisoner is stronger than any injury that may be caused to the [State] in releasing petitioner from custody pending retrial."). Indeed, a prisoner, "suffers irreparable harm each day that he is imprisoned in violation of the United States Constitution."
Certainly the reality of Alberts grossly inhumane conditions of confinement only make this harm more egregious and the urgency for release more compelling.
An expedited hearing date of Monday, February 23rd has been requested. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything from the Court.

Well lookie here, Im back to my world famous (okay, maybe not), fantastic prediction poetry that everyone loves. I am not a poet, nor do I have any intentions of becoming one, but normal predictions do bore me a little bit and spinning a rhyme is one of my favourite things to do. It is dry stuff, but hopefully you find some joy in it...

Without Paul Greengrass its not really the same,
Especially as his place went to Alexander Payne,
Remember that film The Descendants with the Cloon?
I think everyone forgot that pretty soon,
Nebraskas chances here are pretty grey
(yeah, thinking of that joke took me all day)
Since this time the Cloon is out in space,
And Alfonso Cuaron is likely to win this race,
Meaning there could be a Pic/Director split,
But I dont think Steve McQueen will quit,
Its great to see him getting notice for 12 Years a Slave,
Even if Im pretending its really for Shame,
And then theres Oscar favourite David O. Russell,
Getting his third nomination for American Hustle,
Which is great for making an easy rhyme,
But I didnt find the movie to be a good time,
Yet, my loyalties lie with The Wolf of Wall Street,
With Martin Scorseses direction being no mean feat,
Because his direction is terrifyingly fun,
And better than anyone else could do at 71.
All I can say is that I want Alfonso Cuaron to win because Gravity is easily the best directed film of the decade, but then I want Steve McQueen to win because 12 Years a Slave makes the third out of three movies of his that got 5/5 from me. But I also want Martin Scorsese to win because his direction of The Wolf of Wall Street is so amazing because he is taking the piss out of so much and it is beautiful. And yeah, I havent seen Nebraska so I cant comment on Alexander Payne and well...not a fan of either David O. Russell or American Hustle. Apart from the fact that they rhyme. Whenever I say "American Hustle by David O. Russell" I automatically feel like putting my hood up, getting out my grills and corn rows and start an underground rap career.
At least I took something away from that movie...

Remember when Jennifer Lawrence fell up the stairs?
Lets hope that doesnt happen for a second year,
J-Law seems to be a bit of a chance,
Even if her performance is a bit of a farce,
But all hopes are pinned on Lupita Nyongo,
Who is absolute perfection in her first screen go,
Theres also Hawkins, Roberts and Squibb,
Who wont be the ones whom the Academy give,
Still, the race is neck and neck,
And Nyongo is probably the smartest bet.
Well...all I can hope is that Jennifer Lawrence doesnt prematurely win another Oscar. Im still not over her winning last year for Silver Linings Playbook (again, I love the movie, but I didnt love her performance at all), and I can honestly say that she was my least favourite performer out of the big five in American Hustle. However, it definitely does look as if she remains a 50% chance to take this award, with Lupita Nyongo being the other 50%. And I just hope more than anything that Lupita does win, because her speech will be absolutely beautiful and Im still emotionally scarred by her performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Jared Leto seems to have this race all but won,
But lets pretend theres a little surprising fun,
Even though its not for the amazing Shame,
Its great to see the Fass finally getting Oscar fame,
Bradley Cooper has nomination number two,
For being my favourite of the Hustle crew,
Jonah Hills also back for a second round,
How weird does that sentence sound?
Even cooler is the guy whos the captain now,
Barkhad Abdis screen debut sure does wow,
With a BAFTA in his hand he could surprise,
But the winner will be Jared Leto in disguise.
Yeah, Jared Leto is almost definitely going to win this one. Which is absolutely fine, because it is great to have him back on our screens and hes a wonderful Rayon. However, there is every possibility that Barkhad Abdi could be the captain now with this one, since people cant resist the story behind his sudden rise to fame and how wonderful his performance is. I may just be speaking as someone who loves Abdi dearly, but if theres anyone who can contend with Leto, it is him. This category is crazy good, though, with Jonah Hill being my second favourite thing about The Wolf of Wall Street, Bradley Cooper being my favourite thing about American Hustle and Michael Fassbender being my favourite thing about life. Actually - in my English lecture yesterday, we were talking about slavery and the lecturer brought up 12 Years a Slave and then all of a sudden he said "who loves the Fass?" Seriously, Canterbury is my favourite place.

Amy Adams gets her first nom for being a lead,
And its nomination number 18 for Meryl Streep,
Everyone has won before,
Apart from Adams who has missed out x4,
This doesnt seem to be her year,
For no-one seems to compare,
To the brilliant work by Queen Cate,
Who makes a Jasmine to love and hate,
While shes impossible to beat,
Sandra Bullocks Gravity performance has some heat,
Judi Dench is an outside bet,
Considering all the love the Brits usually get.
Theres no way that Cate Blanchett wont be winning this. Which is perfect, because shell be accepting the award off Daniel Day-Lewis and itll probably become one of my top five Oscar moments because both of them are flawless royals of cinema. Im probably more excited about Daniel Day-Lewis presenting this award than I am Cate Blanchett winning it (because God knows when well ever see the guy again), but seriously, Cate will become one of the most deserving actress winners ever. She is perfect in that film.

Sorry, I cant put this category into poetry. It is hard enough doing a prediction for it. But heres how I think thisll go down:
-Christian Bale has absolutely no chance because he is where Tom Hanks should have been.
-Bruce Dern could easily go in for the upset but no one has really been talking up Nebraska, but maybe Im just turning a deaf ear because I havent seen the film.
-Matthew McConaughey is currently the favourite and thats good because the McConnaissance is my favourite thing to be living through and I like to imagine this is all for Killer Joe. But I just dont believe he can win yet.
-Chiwetel Ejiofor, however, I can see winning. Ive actually laid awake thinking about him winning for several nights in a row. I think he can just pull it out of the hat.
-Buuuuuuut theres Leonardo DiCaprio. Who I still believe has every chance of winning. I know that it is hopeful and maybe a little delusional, but can people ignore that this is his best performance ever? Everyone is saying so. And I feel like I just have to predict him as the winner. Because his performance is my favouite of the year by far. And I just want to see him win for this performance.
This category is tearing my soul apart. SO MANY DIVIDED LOYALTIES. But yeah, Im predicting Leonardo. Haters gon hate. Cant be tamed. Never learn. Yolo. All that stuff.

What is a buffer overflow?
A buffer overflow is where you input too much data into something that cannot hold it.
What can exploiting a Buffer Overflow Vulnerability do?
A Buffer Overflow’s main objective is to overwrite the memory address within the EIP (Extended Instruction Pointer) register to control the flow of the program. The EIP register is known as something called an Address Register, meaning it stores memory addresses within it. The EIP register is used to point to the next instruction that is going to be executed. During calling functions, the value of EIP is stored in the stack and is later collected and put back into the register so that it can return to it’s previous location just after the function call. If you can alter EIP’s value, you can change what’s executed. That’s one of the main reasons Buffer Overflows are so widely used, especially if the program is running as root. That could allow you to make the program execute something under root privileges.

For this scenario, I’ve hand crafted a simple vulnerable program for usage in this tutorial:

Let’s compile that with gcc and get exploiting. (We’ll be using the command “gcc -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -o colour -ggdb colour.c” run as the root user). It’s very likely that you’ll encounter warnings during compilation but what do you expect when you’re attempting to design vulnerable code?
Remember that our aim is to overwrite the EIP register. We’ll be using gdb (The GNU Project Debugger) to see what’s going on and whether it’s worked.
Let’s compile that with gcc and get exploiting. (We’ll be using the command “gcc -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -o colour -ggdb colour.c” run as the root user). It’s very likely that you’ll encounter warnings during compilation but what do you expect when you’re attempting to design vulnerable code?

The reason this didn’t work is because there are several nested functions (Including the call for the printf function, which is where our error “0x4002269f in strlen () from /lib/libc.so.6? is coming from. Printf in actual fact calls vfprintf() and then that calls strlen, creating a lot of jmps in the code)in the program which means that there are multiple stack frames. The perl print has most likely overwritten past EIP and then overwritten some important function arguments stored in those stack frames. We can use the list command in gdb to view our C source and decide the best place to add a breakpoint.

Breakpoint 1 at 0x8048464: file colour.c, line 7.“b” is the breakpoint command for gdb. I’ve set it to line 7 because that’s where the printf function is called, which will lead to our previous error “0x4002269f in strlen () from /lib/libc.so.6?. Now if we run the program again;

Now we can see we have made arr become equal to our memory address 0×41414141 however we need to remove the NULL that is also there, so for good practice, we’ll use less A’s until we get to the perfect number. So let’s delete our last breakpoint and do that.

eip 0x80484dc 0x80484dcAs you can see, the last part of the EBP register’s value was changed to the hex value of the character “A”, however we still need to overwrite with 7 more bytes (1 byte = 2 hex characters) for the perfect number of characters to fill the EBP register and the EIP register. This is because as you see below, we still have to use 3 more bytes to fill the EBP register, however our aim is to corrupt the EIP register, so we need to overflow 4 more bytes on top of the three bytes to actually corrupt EIP (however, you will see soon that those 4 bytes are going to be something other than AAAA (0×41414141)).

It’s the register that points to where the top of the stack is. We go about getting it from our own little C program as shown below. (The ASM in our code below is written in AT&T Syntax and not Intel Syntax so don’t get confused because we’re moving the value of ESP into EAX)

For the purpose of this tutorial, we’re going to be using Aleph1?s Shellcode and save us the time of writing our own. It is as follows below:

So we’ll use about 75 bytes. Next comes the difficult bit. We need to guess our return address so that it ends up in the NOP sled. I’ll estimate 0×80. I subtract this fro the ESP value as shown below to get my Return Address.
Our attack buffer is, in this case, 158 bytes. We need all the parts of our exploit to add up to 158 bytes. It’s generally good practice to have about half of that for the NOP sled. So we’ll use about 75 bytes. Next comes the difficult bit. We need to guess our return address so that it ends up in the NOP sled. I’ll estimate 0×80. I subtract this fro the ESP value as shown below to get my Return Address.
0xbffffef1 – 0×80 = 0xBFFFFE71
Now we need to convert this address into Little-Endian format because that’s the architecture we are working with (This just involved flipping the bytes of the memory address around in Shellcode (remember, 2 hex characters per byte)). This gives us:

Now to find out how many times we need this, we need to do a simple calculation; (Attack Buffer Size – Number of NOP bytes – Number of Bytes of Shellcode) / 4 bytes that make up our return address.
(158-75-53)/4 = 7.5
That means we need to repeat this address 7 times (always round down). SO let’s recap;
We have an attack buffer of 158 bytes. We have 75 bytes of NOP for our NOP sled, 53 bytes of Shellcode to be executed, and 28 bytes of our return address (7*4). This adds together to give 156 bytes overall. However, if we try this;
