Alia Bhatt is known for her safe answers but looks like Neha Dhupia has brought out the sass in her. On Neha’s #NoFilterNeha, Alia opened up about a lot of things that she usually doesn’t speak about in public. Perhaps she did let her guard down around Dhupia as she openly discussed controversial things, including commenting on people. By now we’ve got the way how Neha rolls. She likes to present her guests with at least one tricky question. And this time, for Alia, it revolved around the men she is rumoured to have dated from the industry.

Alia has been linked to her 2 States co-star Arjun Kapoor and Sidharth Malhotra. In fact, it was recently even reported that Sid and Alia called it quits. Anyway, so when the 23 year old was asked to choose who among the two was a better kisser, she picked Malhotra but had a very strong reason behind the same. Neha asked Alia to choose between Arjun and Sidharth, well, any co-star for that matter and rate the best kisser out of them all. To this, Bhatt said, “I’ve kissed Arjun in one film and he’s good. But I’ve kissed Sid in two, so more practice. So yeah, Sid.”

However, while we thought that the mention of Sid would end there, it didn’t quite pan out that way. There was a lot of subtle gushing done by Alia for her ex boyfriend Sidharth. In fact, when the rapid fire round started, the Dear Zindagi actress was asked to choose between Arjun and Sid, her answer, without a doubt was Sid. She was then asked to choose between Varun and Sid and again, her answer was Sid. There was no hesitation as she promptly answered all the questions quite honestly. Perhaps there’s still a lot of soft space in Miss Bhatt’s heart for the 31 year old actor. If you remember, he even attended the screening of Dear Zindagi, which was quite sweet of him.

This afternoon Albert Woodfoxs legal team submitted an application to US District Court Judge James A. Brady for release on bail with expedited review (View the court filing here).

This month marks 2 years since Alberts conviction was overturned for a third time based on a finding of racial discrimination in the selection of his grand jury foreperson, a decision now firmly upheld by a unanimous panel of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Though the Attorney General may continue to stand in the way of justice and appeal yet again to the US Supreme Court and/or attempt to retry him, Alberts attorneys argue that there is no legal or moral justification to hold him in prison any longer, nor any reason to believe the State of Louisiana could succeed in reconvicting him in a fair proceeding.

In a moving petition, they detail not just the legal underpinnings of freeing those wrongfully convicted, but also the deeply flawed legal processes that have resulted in this innocent man spending an unconscionable 4 decades in a solitary cell. As they point out, "the State has now had not just one but two chances to convict Mr. Woodfox at a trial that passes constitutional muster, and failed."

The application reminds the Court that the State itself during the appeals process admitted that if Albert were to prevail "re-trying him for a crime that occurred more than 40 years ago...may render retrial difficult, even impossible."

But regardless of whether the State elects to retry Albert or not, as another federal district court concluded, "[T]he liberty interest of an improperly convicted prisoner is stronger than any injury that may be caused to the [State] in releasing petitioner from custody pending retrial."). Indeed, a prisoner, "suffers irreparable harm each day that he is imprisoned in violation of the United States Constitution."

Certainly the reality of Alberts grossly inhumane conditions of confinement only make this harm more egregious and the urgency for release more compelling.

An expedited hearing date of Monday, February 23rd has been requested. We will let you know as soon as we hear anything from the Court.

We are sad to report that the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has decided to continue the stay and block the release of Albert Woodfox until the States appeal is heard (read articles by The Advocate and Washington Post).

Though it means some months before Albert will see his long overdue freedom realized, the court has granted an "expedited" status for the appeal. Oral Arguments are set for the week of August 31st. The States written argument as to why they believe Judge Bradys order should be overturned is due on July 10th. Then Alberts team has three weeks to respond before the State is allowed a final rebuttal on August 7th.

Despite the overwhelming calls for Alberts freedom from the people, congressmen, NGOs like Amnesty International, and 3 legal rulings overturning his original conviction, the State continues their cruel campaign of vengeance against Albert. Enough is Enough. Once again we see that, as Robert King says, "Legality and Morality do not shake hands in the court room". 

Though we are disappointed our friend will not be released today, we remain confident that the truth of his innocence and integrity of his struggle for justice will ultimately free him, sooner rather than later, and will continue to shed light on the dire situation faced by thousands left in solitary for decades for no legitimate reason. We have spoken with Albert, and although disappointed, he remains stoic and wanted to let everyone know he remains strong and will never give up till he gets justice.

Amnesty International USA: Woodfox Must Be Released Immediately

The human rights organization called todays Fifth Circuit ruling the result of a "desperate attempt to thwart justice" by the Attorney General.

WASHINGTON-Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in Louisiana announced that they would continue a stay of a U.S. District Judges decision to release Albert Woodfox. The Courts decision effectively blocks the release of the Louisiana prisoner, pending a ruling on whether or not Albert Woodfox will be tried a third time. This decision follows U.S. District Judge James J. Bradys ruling on Tuesday, which granted unconditional release to the last imprisoned member of the Angola 3, Albert Woodfox. In response, Amnesty International USA Executive Director Steven W. Hawkins issued the following statement:

    "Given that the overturning of Albert Woodfoxs conviction on three separate occasions was not enough, Judge Bradys decision to grant him unconditional release should have certainly ended this 43-year-long nightmare. Instead, he remains behind bars, fighting to prove his innocence as a result of the Louisiana Attorney Generals desperate attempt to thwart justice.

    "At this point, the Louisiana authorities must ensure Albert Woodfoxs freedom-not only from incarceration, but from the deeply flawed legal process that has consumed him for more than four decades."

Since 2013 alone, Amnesty International USA has generated more than 100,000 actions on Woodfoxs behalf, including the delivery of a petition to Governor Jindal with more than 50,000 signatures calling for Albert Woodfoxs release. Over the course of the last five years, Amnestys global movement has generated more than 500,000 actions on behalf of the Angola 3. UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Juan Mendez U.N. decried the indefinite solitary confinement imposed on Woodfox, saying that it "clearly amounts to torture and it should be lifted immediately."

On June 11, in the wake of Judge Bradys ruling, 18 members of the Louisiana House of Representatives voted for a resolution (H.R. 208) urging Attorney General Caldwell to stop standing in the way of justice, withdraw his appeals, and let Judge Bradys unconditional writ and release ruling stand.
